I had a slight delay when passing through the Thai border and upon exiting the terminal I could not find the van anywhere as the driver had not informed us where he would park. After phonecalls to the office and the driver I managed to find the van, with a very annoyed and unaplogetic driver. Who had asked us each for 20 baht surprisingly, which is odd considering it's free to cross the border and we had already paid our van fare. Coming back, it was incredibly difficult to find the departure point as it is pretty tucked away. Again we were asked for money when arriving at the border by the driver, 3 Ringit each now. We did have a delay on departure as we drove around Georgetown collecting additional passengers for nearly 45 minutes, but it was not a big problem for us. We had another delay at the border crossing when a few passengers had some issues and we ended up leaving one passenger behind because they were not allowed to cross the border, but that is not the fault of the travel company.

The van is quite old and uncomfortable but it was not unexpected, most of the vans for crossing Hat Yai to Penang are the same, so no complaints there. The driver did his best to find out where I would like to drop in Penang, even asking another driver when he doesn't know. I guess fellow travelers should be aware that you will be asked for 10 baht for "passport stamping" when crossing from Hat Yai to Malaysia and from Malaysia to Hat Yai, paid MYR$10 for "document filling" and MYR$20 for "express queue" at the checkpoint. I was quite happy to pay for the "express queue" as during the time of day, it was a really long queue and we were led to a room where another officer issued the stamps. I understand it is not a legal practice but it has been ongoing forever - do as the local does I suppose, I am not about to be the one person on the van to say no to paying and make the whole van wait 2 hours for me!Van Regional 14pax, New Asian Travel New Asian Travel, Jan 2, 2020

Iwas in Hat Yai a few weeks ago to escape mundane weekend routine for a change. Susprisingly, most things sold there were not as cheap as initially thought mainly because it was a long weekend in Penang and many people including the Penangites were flooding the small
